Last weekend I managed to find an hour on hour to shoot some expired film. Or so I thought.
I picked 2 rolls that had been sitting in my fridge for years. In this post you can see photos from a roll of Fujicolor 100 (Fuji Industrial) that I shot in my Contax G1.
In my next post tomorrow you can see results from a roll of Agfa Vista 100 in my Minolta TC-1. Both films were 24 exposures and both were ‘develop before’ 2009.
I was on the Gold Coast to pick up my daughter and wife who were coming back from Sydney after seeing the Taylor Swift Eras tour. I made the journey to Coolangatta early so I could get some meditative film photography time in.
Fifteen minutes and 12 exposures in to each roll, my daughter called from the tarmac. They had arrived early - not the call I wanted to get. A little hot and now a little stressed, I walked quickly back to the car firing off the remaining shots. Despite the rush, I must say I’m quite pleased with the results.
Just by chance I’d managed to choose a street with just the kind of thing I like to photograph: old houses (including a weatherboard beach shack), Hills Hoist washing lines, and pretty flowers.
The resutls from the G1 are spectacular - the 45mm Planar lens is one of the best and sharpest lenses ever produced for film.
The G1 has its quirks though. It happily focussed on a pink flower swaying in the wind, but refused to focus on the passionfruit above. I thought I was outsmarting it by setting my focus distance manually to 45cm / 1.5 feet and measuring the distance. It should’ve been perfect, but as you can see, it was a blurry mess.
