Nice to see these pictures of a slightly older China. As Michael, not Mike noted much of China, especially in the major cities, has been demolished in recent decades. I currently live in Guangzhou - the city formerly known as Canton - and we are fortunate that it has managed to cling on to a few older, more traditional neighbourhoods. I'm looking forward to seeing your contemporary China photos. Did you make it to Guangzhou on your trip?
Oh wow, would love to make it to Guangzhou one day Olli! This time I only went to Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. It was a on a cheap package tour with my Dad, Uncle and nephew. I enjoyed the trip, but not sure I'd do a package tour like that again. I got frustrated every time we had to leave when I found somewhere cool to take photos ha ha. The Chinese tour guide mentioned Guangzhou - she said the only thing with 4 legs they don't eat there are tables and chairs!
Yes, the Cantonese do have a reputation within China for eating anything that moves. There are some interesting menu items and raw (sometimes live) ingredients once you get into the small markets and food stalls.
This is cool to see, you went at an interesting time of development in China and particularly Beijing. I’m sure there was a lot that was different in your trip back. I know especially with the olympics in 2008, the Chinese government did a number on Beijing in terms of cleaning it up, carving off the “rough edges” but in the process destroying a lot of interesting cultural things as well.
Yes I think you're right Michael... it's so different now. On my recent trip I really had to hunt to find anything that was older and more authentic rather than generic modern developments without character. You could say that about other countries of course. I'm sure if I'd gone to smaller towns or cities the old China would've been a bit easier to find.
