Jozankei is an onsen (hot springs) town about an hour from Sapporo. I feel lucky to have spent 2 wonderful nights there in a beautiful hotel with my family. I featured the view from our hotel room in a recent newsletter:
As wonderful as the hotel was, the real magic happened outdoors. Locked out of our hotel room until 3pm on our day of arrival, we wandered around town.
We visited a temple, saw the outdoor hot springs, visited a souvenir store, and ate snacks by the river. We then walked out to the beautiful red Futami Tsuribashi suspension bridge which had stunning views over the snow capped countryside.
When I was in Japan I had some ideas for YouTube videos based on my travels. As I started to put together a video about Hokkaido over the weekend, a funny thing happened. The idea I had went out the window, and instead I ended up with a 3 minute short film about Jozankei.
In the video I reflect on what made this entire trip so special for me, and I added those words as captions.
Jozankei: a short film about travel and life is the second video in my “Japan on film” series. All up I expect there to be around 10 videos related to shooting film in Japan.
If you enjoyed the recent Ricoh GRIII digital photos, don’t worry, there are plenty more of those on the way too.
If you enjoy this newsletter, I’d be honoured if you share it with your friends.

Travel to foreign lands revives our senses. Gives us new lines of sight in our outings. Exploring unfamiliar worlds outside of our everyday familiar and known landscapes results in fresh images and breathes new life in our cameras. You nailed it. Nicely done.
