If you’re looking for a compact medium format camera that has autofocus and exceptional image quality, you should consider the Fujifilm GA645.
In late 2021 I had one of these compact beauties on loan from Sydney photographer and allround good guy Paul Wheeler.
I’d been looking at buying one of these cameras for years, so I was keen to try it out. I put 4 rolls of Portra through the camera (1 x 160, 1 x 400, 2 x 800) in the space of a couple of weeks over the Christmas 2021 / New Year 2022 period.
So impressed with the results, I decided to make my first YouTube video a review of the camera. There was only one hitch though - after recording the video, I hated seeing myself on camera.
I looked and sounded too staged and rehearsed, so I shelved the video - and the photos. More than 18 months later, I found the photos again and decided to salvage the video footage.
Although I wished I’d published the video when I first recorded it, I’m glad that it’s finally seen the light of day now. Yes I’m slightly over-enthusiastic in my delivery, but I think there is some good information in there for people curious about the camera.
Will viewers notice any of the things that make me cringe when I watch the video? Maybe, maybe not - often we’re our own worst critics.
Whether it’s photography, YouTube videos, or anything else, we can’t be expected to get it right all the time. Every experience puts us another step further down the path of our journey.
I recently saw a clip from an interview with YouTube sensation Mr Beast. His advice was to “Make 100 videos and improve something every time”. I’m not sure I have improved something every time in my 41 videos to date, but hopefully I’m headed in the right direction.
